Mike Richey is known across the commonwealth as an outstanding Gideon speaker, devoted family man and the University of Kentucky’s top fundraiser. In his role as vice president of philanthropy and alumni engagement, Richey has successfully raised millions and millions of dollars for the university in Lexington. In many ways, the Muhlenberg County native has been at the center of UK’s dramatic growth.
Richey was the main speaker for the Philanthropy: Lunch & Learn event on Monday, Aug. 14 at the Kentucky Baptist Building. The Kentucky Baptist Foundation (KBF) and the Kentucky Baptist Convention (KBC) co-hosted this powerful learning opportunity. Leaders from KBC entities and agencies were in attendance along with college and non-profit executives. Richey delivered a wealth of knowledge, insider experiences and heartfelt words of encouragement to build the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
There were many examples of excellent execution Mike had in his role at UK. However, there was a greater message for everyone in attendance. Here was my takeaway—
• Integrity. Mike starts his morning in Bible study, prayer and devotion each day at 5:45 a.m. He stated, “I need to hear from the Lord and for Him to guide my path.” He makes a point to tell people that if you are asking someone to give to a cause, you better also make a contribution. Integrity is the person you are when no one else is around. Mike’s passion for helping people reach their personal goals is obvious.
• Authenticity. Mike delivered a wonderful presentation that was built on stories he had experienced while visiting Kentucky’s 120 counties. “You have to get into the kitchen before people will share their story with you. You don’t hear a person’s real story in the living room.” Mike encouraged those gathered to “be real” in meeting with potential donors. He told leaders to help people grow in their relationship with Jesus.

• Preparation. While being a man of integrity and authenticity, Mike Richey was prepared. He described the ways he would prepare and lead the University of Kentucky’s Philanthropy Team to connect with alumni and friends. Austin Wilkerson, General Counsel at KBF, said “Mike Richey is a great example of someone that allowed God to use him. He was so prepared and just look at the results.” Richey delivered excellent examples of meeting clients but also praying for God’s will to be done. As Christians, let us be prepared to advance His kingdom each and every day.
Philanthropy Lunch & Learn was an excellent event for those interested in gaining knowledge on growing funds for God’s kingdom. We are so pleased Mike Richey has joined the KBF board of directors and look forward to seeing how God will bless our combined efforts to “Fund the Great Commission.” KBF stands ready to assist Kentucky Baptists in planning their estates and furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ
